Phase 2 CURRICULUM

Technical Skills for a Trainer

TNA: Training Need Analysis (TNA) is the process of identifying the gap between employee training and needs of training. Training needs analysis is the first stage in the training process and involves a series of steps that reveal whether training will help to solve problem which has been identified. Training can be described as “the acquisition of skills, concepts or attitudes that result in improved performance within the job environment”. Training needs analysis looks at each side of operational area of job so that the concepts and attitudes of the human elements of a system can be effectively identified and appropriate training can be specified.

Instructional Design: The instructional design document describes the course content, but it doesn’t contain the course content – just like a blue print isn’t a house and a software design document isn’t the actual software.During the instructional design phase, the training specialist reviews the course’s learning objectives and considers the following questions:

  • How should the content be organized?
  • How should ideas be presented to learners?
  • What delivery format should be used?
  • What types of activities and exercises will best help learners?
  • How should the course measure learner’s accomplishments?

The answers to these questions help the training specialist produce the instructional design document. This document describes the course structure and its instructional strategies.

During the instructional design phase, the trainer does not create course content. The actual course content and training materials will be created during the training development phase.

Developing Breakthrough Training Modules: The development phase of instructional design addresses the tools and processes used to create instructional material. This stage includes: Story Boards, developing power point slides, audio, all multimedia elements and handouts. The development phase is the process of authoring and producing the materials needed to meet the objectives.

  • Creating a sample
  • Structuring & developing the course materials
  • Adding zest with visuals
  • Conducting a run – through

Implementation, Facilitation & Transformation: The implementation phase is where the ‘rubber hits the road’. It is conceivable that a well-designed training program could fail if instructors and learners are not prepared and/or the learning tools are not put into place.

The aim of a trainer ought not to just transmit information but to facilitate transformation. The commitment, dedication, subject mastery and a well-designed program is the key to achieve breakthrough results.

Evaluating Training Programs: Historically, training has been measured from the perspective of what transpired during the training program: did participants enjoy the experience; was the content relevant; did learning occur? This approach is still used in many organizations, and a great deal of training is not measured beyond participant –reaction smile sheets and self-reported learning;

which are easy to complete. Transfer of learning to work setting and the impact on key organizational measures is what organization is increasingly keen to measure. This section of the program helps training practitioners to assess, improve and report on training programs and results.

  • Process Data Vs Outcome Data
  • Function of Evaluation
  • Questions an evaluation needs to answer
  • How to conduct an Evaluation
  • Framework for Continuous self-improvement.
